At least seven people are dead after flooding in Indiana has caused families to evacuate their homes and forced business owners to close their doors.

Multiple people were rescued as floods continued, the Indianapolis Star, a part of the USA TODAY Network, reported. As of Monday, Aug. 17, nearly six days after the storms that prompted the floods, flooding is now affecting homes in southern areas of the state.

“Our hearts go out to those people who have been affected by the flooding and the infrastructure loss, but now we’re moving forward with things that we can control,” Hamilton County commissioner Christine Altman said at an Aug. 16 news conference. “That’s the assessment, recovery, reconstruction.”

On Aug. 15, President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Indiana, which allows the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide resources to the state.

The flooding comes amid a broader stretch of extreme weather across the United States, with dangerous heat fueling wildfire concerns in the West while repeated rounds of thunderstorms soaked parts of the Midwest and East.
