Phoenix police were investigating whether a 66-year-old man fell from an overpass onto eastbound Interstate 10 before he was struck and killed. Just before midnight on May 16, officers responded to a call to assist Department of Public Safety troopers after a man had been struck by a vehicle on the freeway, spokesperson Cmdr. Mercedes Fortune said. Phoenix Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and pronounced the man dead. He was identified as 66-year-old Max Jeffrey, according to Fortune. Jeffrey may have fallen from the
12th Street overpass above the I-10 and was struck by a driver on the freeway. “The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and reported they believed the man fell from the overpass when he hit him,” said Fortune, “Officers evaluated the driver and saw no signs of impairment.” It is still unknown whether Jeffrey fell from the overpass or was struck by the vehicle as he was crossing the freeway on foot, Fortune said.
