Manchester City is seeing red. And it’s not just because they are playing longtime rival Manchester United.
Phil Foden was given a red card and ejected from the Manchester Derby on Sunday, Sept. 13. In the 23rd minute with the match scoreless, the Manchester City midfielder made contact with Red Devils midfielder Bruno Fernandes while fighting for the ball.
Foden was gaining possession when Fernandes came up and pushed him in the back. Foden fell to the pitch and Fernandes kicked him in the back as he was trying to get the ball. Foden struck his legs out to get back at his opponent. Fernandes immediately grabbed his stomach and grimaced as he collapsed onto the field. Foden stood back up and bent over his rival.
The referee blew the whistle and the City star held his arms out in question while Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford rushed over to check out the scene with his own arms out. The referee showed Foden the red card and the crowd at Old Trafford erupted while a few players got into a scuffle. Foden shoved his way through to the referee to plead his case, but the decision stood.
According to The Independent, this is the first red card in the rivalry that sent off a Manchester City player since 2006.
Manchester City now has 10 players on the pitch and the score is 0-0 at halftime.
