A quiet kind of disbelief hangs over this casting news: Peter Dinklage, best known for roles that live in sharp dialogue and character gravity, is stepping into an action-thriller world built for adrenaline.
The plan is for Dinklage to star in The Reckoner, a brand-new original action flick written by Derek Kolstad and directed by Kenji Tanigaki. Lionsgate is set to release the movie, with AGBO producing.
Kolstad’s name carries real momentum in modern action cinema. He wrote the script for John Wick. the 2014 hit that introduced Keanu Reeves’ titular retired hitman. whose retirement is cut short when his puppy is killed and he sets out for vengeance. Directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Kolstad. the film became known for blending practical stunt work with what’s often described as gun-fu. and it helped inject new energy into the action genre.
Now Kolstad is building something fresh. The Reckoner is set to be directed by Kenji Tanigaki. who is coming off The Furious. a film that Lionsgate snapped up after its stellar debut at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and then closed a deal for with Anthony and Joe Russo’s AGBO producing the picture.
Dinklage’s involvement also arrives after his recent role in the television spin-off series Dexter: Resurrection.
AGBO is producing The Reckoner along with Kolstad and Dinklage, with Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Kassee Whiting also attached through AGBO. The movie will be produced under David Ginsberg’s and Dinklage’s Estuary Films banner.
Russo-Otstot said in a statement: “Derek Kolstad and Peter Dinklage came to us with a world we hadn’t encountered before, original, action-packed, and with genuine soul.”
