Pete Alonso drives Orioles past Red Sox 4-2

Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer and Shane Baz pitched seven innings as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Tuesday night in Boston.

Boston (MISRYOUM USA News) — The Orioles didn’t wait long. In the third inning, Pete Alonso sent a 2-2 pitch from Connelly Early over the Green Monster in left field, a two-run homer that put Baltimore ahead 3-1.

It was a jolt for a Red Sox team that had moments early but couldn’t find another consistent hit after that. Baltimore finished the night with a 4-2 victory Tuesday, winning its third straight and ending a three-game road skid.

Shane Baz pitched seven solid innings for the win. The right-hander, now 3-5 after the start, allowed four hits and struck out six. He gave up a leadoff triple to Jarren Duran in the first inning, but then settled in. After Boston managed no hits beyond that early trouble. Baz held the Red Sox without another hit until the fifth. and during the middle portion of the game he retired 10 straight batters.

Coby Mayo added more offense for Baltimore, tying the score 1-all in the second with his seventh homer of the season, a drive to the top of the Monster that was initially called a double before being overturned on a video review.

Alonso’s homer was his 12th of the season. The first baseman also finished with 38 RBIs.

Boston got its runs from Wilyer Abreu and Marcelo Mayer, both driving in runs on sacrifice flies. Wilyer Abreu and Marcelo Mayer each produced a sacrifice fly that brought in Boston’s runs as the Orioles managed to stay in front.

Even with the Orioles’ lead secured, there were still sharp moments. Gunnar Henderson’s double to left in the first inning extended his streak of reaching base safely at Fenway Park to 23 games—matching the number of times he has appeared at the ballpark.

Early went 5 1/3 innings for Boston, allowing four runs on six hits.

In the ninth, Rico Garcia struck out two for his fourth save, sealing the Orioles’ win.

Up next, Baltimore RHP Chris Bassitt (4-3, 5.06 ERA) faces Boston LHP Payton Tolle (2-2, 2.61) as the series continues on Wednesday.
