Tuesday night in Laredo started with a call near Loop 20 and Saunders Street—and ended with emergency crews working around a burning aircraft just after 10 p.m.

The Laredo Police Department reported the crash at about 10 p.m. in the area of the Texas Department of Public Safety office. Laredo Police Department Public Information Officer Joe Baeza was on scene and delivered what he described as a very preliminary report. He said there were people pulled out of the plane who were alive at the time. but their current conditions are unknown.

Baeza said the plane crashed shortly after 10 p.m. near the railroad tracks connecting the City Hall Annex near Target. He said the aircraft did not appear to collide with any vehicles. and there did not appear to be any injuries in that regard. Still, he stressed that the information remains very preliminary.

“This is a very early start to a very long process here,” Baeza said. “We’re probably here for the long haul. The NTSB and the TSS will come in and do their own investigation later on.”

As responders worked, police closed northbound and southbound lanes on Loop 20 near the Saunders Street and Clark Boulevard area. Baeza asked locals not to come to the scene. He pointed to unknown variables. including hazmat materials and the fuel from the plane. saying officials wanted the area isolated and the public to stay away.

LPD officers were seen on scene helping put out the fire from the plane. Baeza said they were using a specialized foam that they use in these types of emergency responses.

The incident remains under investigation, with more information expected as it becomes available.
