PenUp 3.9.22.23 brings new brushes for S Pen users

PenUp version – Samsung’s PenUp app is rolling out version 3.9.22.23 with 53 new brushes, a new Dual brush effect, smoother brush controls, and draft import/export that preserves layers and settings across devices.

When you open Samsung’s PenUp app to sketch on a Galaxy phone or tablet, the tools you use matter more than most people think. The latest update, version 3.9.22.23, is designed to make casual digital art feel faster to start and easier to refine—especially for users who draw with an S Pen.

PenUp is Samsung’s app for sketching and coloring templates, originally built for touch input.. With this update, brush options get a major refresh: the app adds 53 new brushes through a “Download more brushes” option.. It also introduces Dual brush, a new tool that lets two strokes work together for layered effects.

Samsung also reworked how brush controls are presented.. Users can now tap a brush twice on the selection screen to open individual settings.. The updated menu separates controls that users might not need right away and adds a live preview. giving a clearer look at how changes will affect the brush before drawing on the canvas.

Switching devices is getting simpler, too. PenUp now includes Export Draft and Import Draft options that save work as a “.penup” file, preserving layers and key settings. Samsung account sync is also part of the update, meant to help users continue projects when moving between devices.

Editing tools receive smaller but practical upgrades. In the Lasso selection tool, Auto Select can automatically pick out objects in a drawing. PenUp also supports automatic landscape rotation, but only when Auto Rotate is enabled on the Galaxy device.

Even with the S Pen focus, PenUp still isn’t strictly for stylus users. The app includes a Finger Drawing mode for touch input, which works well for coloring templates, quick tracing, rough sketches, or casual doodles, though Samsung notes it isn’t as precise as using an S Pen.

  1. PenUp updating again like anybody asked. 53 brushes sounds nice but I just want it to stop crashing when I try to export. Also why is it called Dual brush like it’s gonna do my work for me?

  2. Wait so the .penup file preserves layers across devices? That’s actually kinda big, but I swear every time I switch phones I lose stuff anyway. Maybe I’m not using Samsung account right? I don’t even draw with the S Pen that much, just finger doodles, so idk if it’ll help me.

  3. Honestly I thought “S Pen focus” meant it was only for S Pens lol. The finger drawing mode sounds pointless though if it’s “not as precise”?? Also Auto Select in Lasso could be good or it’ll just pick the wrong thing like it always does on other apps. Samsung really wants you to download more brushes instead of fixing basic stuff.
