Penélope Cruz’s Cannes premiere earns 20-minute ovation

Penélope Cruz’s new film “La bola negra” debuted at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 21, drawing a 20-minute standing ovation and keeping the audience’s applause close to the festival’s record.
The applause didn’t fade when the lights went up—it just kept going. At the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, Penélope Cruz stepped out for the premiere of her new movie “La bola negra” on Thursday, May 21, and the audience response turned into a full-on moment.
Cruz, 52, looked striking in an one-shoulder black Chanel dress with a high slit as she arrived for the event. Joining her were co-stars Guitarricadelafuente, Carlos Gonzalez, Miguel Bernardeau, Milo Quifes, and Lola Dueñas, along with co-directors and co-writers Javier Calvó and Javier Ambrossi.
The Cannes synopsis describes “La bola negra” as a story of interconnected lives: “three men in three different eras,” with three lives linked by “sexuality and desire, pain and inheritance,” and “one of Federico García Lorca´s last, unfinished works.”
That promise seemed to land. The film received an overwhelming positive reaction from the audience at the premiere, culminating in a 20-minute standing ovation. It came very close to breaking the Cannes record for an ovation in a premiere—the record currently held by Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth. ” which clocked a 22-minute ovation in 2006.
As the crowd continued applauding, Calvó and Ambrossi addressed the room with a blunt message. “To everyone who thinks that we’re gonna step back in our LGBTQ rights, I have bad news!”
Cruz’s Cannes appearance also nods to what’s next for her on screen. Last year, it was announced that Penélope and her husband Javier Bardem will once again be sharing the screen in the new thriller movie “Bunker.”
