The night had barely ended when the call came in—just after 4 a.m. Saturday—along a downtown Los Angeles roadway near the 110 Freeway.
A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle near an offramp, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Crews responded to the scene near West 8th Place and Garland Avenue after receiving reports of a car crash involving a pedestrian, the department said.
When emergency personnel arrived, they found one person dead and another person who was transported to a hospital, said Lyndsey Lantz, a department spokesperson. By 8:30 a.m., California Highway Patrol remained on the scene.
A video posted by OnScene.TV captured officers standing near a black Cadillac sedan with its front passenger headlight and fender destroyed. In the footage, a person sits on the pavement behind the car while talking to officers. Later, officers lead the person around the scene. Soon. the person is seen hiding their face with a Spider-Man blanket as they collapse. screaming as another person hugs them.
Outside the roadway, a few officers were gathered around a gray pop-up canopy with its sides partially in the road. No information was available Saturday morning about whether anyone was inside.
For investigators, the damaged vehicle and the officers’ activity around the crash site were a sign the scene still wasn’t ready for the public to move past. For the people left there—hugging, crying, clutching a blanket over their face—the morning didn’t unfold the way it was supposed to.
