The sentence was final in every way a courtroom sentence can be: Paul Caneiro will serve life in prison without parole for killing his brother and his brother’s family in their Colts Neck home in 2018.
The case unfolded like a nightmare that refused to stay contained. Caneiro was convicted on four murder counts covering the deaths of Keith Caneiro, Keith’s wife Jennifer, and their two children, Jesse and Sophia. The jury reached its verdict after just a few hours of deliberation earlier this year.
During sentencing, the convictions extended far beyond the killings themselves. Caneiro was also found guilty of multiple other charges. including two counts of aggravated arson. possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose. possession of a knife for an unlawful purpose. theft. misapplication of entrusted property. and hindering his own apprehension.
Authorities said Keith was found fatally shot outside his home. Inside, Jennifer and the couple’s two children were found stabbed. Jennifer was also shot.
Prosecutors said the sequence did not stop at the murders. After carrying out the killings, Caneiro allegedly set his own home on fire in Ocean Township—an attempt to cover up the crimes by destroying evidence and making it appear that he, too, was a victim.
Hours later, investigators connected Caneiro to the earlier killings at his brother’s home. That connection shifted the focus of the investigation squarely onto him.
Prosecutors told the jury the motive was financial and tied to an alleged insurance fraud scheme. The brothers, Keith and Paul Caneiro, owned two businesses together in Asbury Park.
The defense tried to pull the case away from Caneiro. It argued for reasonable doubt by claiming investigators failed to fully examine another brother as a potential suspect.
The courtroom record now closes the door on that argument. With four murder counts and a life sentence without parole—paired with convictions on arson. weapons. and charges tied to concealment—the case ends with a clear consequence for a crime that authorities described as one of the most shocking murder cases in New Jersey in recent years.
For the family members left behind, the timeline cannot be rewritten. In 2018, a home in Colts Neck became the scene of four deaths. Earlier this year, jurors deliberated only a few hours before deciding. And now, the man convicted in that violence has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
