Patton Oswalt Jokes After Viral Death Hoax

After a viral X post claimed Patton Oswalt had died, the Emmy-winning actor responded with a joke about adjusting to the sudden news as fans joined in across social media.
Patton Oswalt spent Thursday (June 25) battling a rumor that he never had to face in real life: a viral post on X, formerly known as Twitter, claiming the 57-year-old Emmy-winning actor had died.
The original post carried a blunt message—“Seriously f–k 2026. Rest in peace”—and included a black and white photo of Patton. Before long, a community note appeared on the post, clarifying that the Ratatouille actor is NOT dead.
“American comedian and actor Patton Oswalt is not dead. He is alive and actively touring in 2026,” the community note read.
Once he saw the hoax spreading, Patton leaned into the chaos with his own bit. Posting alongside the original claim, he wrote: “Yeah, this has been very sudden and I’m trying to adjust. Asking for privacy as I ascend.”
Fans quickly piled on, turning the moment into a shared, darkly humorous response. One user told him, “I’m sorry that you died and had to find out this way,” while another added, “Imagine finding out you are dead through twitter. Fly high angel.”
The story landed in a wider pattern of celebrities being pulled into death-hoax rumors online. If you didn’t see, Queen Latifah also recently responded to death hoax rumors.
For Patton, the outcome was simple: the rumor didn’t win. The actor is alive, actively touring in 2026—and on Thursday, he made sure everyone knew it.

That community note thing is kinda wild.
People are seriously disgusting for making up stuff like that. But he handled it with a joke so I guess it worked? Still, imagine seeing “rest in peace” and believing it for like 2 seconds.
I mean Twitter/X is basically just misinformation speedrunning. Also the article said “f-k 2026” like… was that about the year? Or was it just the usual angry troll wording. Either way, community notes are late half the time.
Good for him I guess? But I don’t think it’s funny that people were saying he died like that. The “ascend” line is dark, like come on. Also does it say he’s touring in 2026 which is already basically guaranteed right? Like how do we know the hoax wasn’t the “announcement” and then the note was just damage control lol. And the Queen Latifah thing too… can’t keep up anymore.
