Patriots’ A.J. Brown shuts down ‘best ever’ talk

A.J. Brown addressed a message tied to his departure from the Philadelphia Eagles at New England’s mandatory minicamp, then quickly pivoted to the chemistry he’s building with Drake Maye after a few practices together.
New England’s blockbuster trade for A.J. Brown has barely had time to settle, but the sticker shock is already colliding with a familiar kind of unfinished business—especially in Philadelphia.
Brown spoke to the media on Thursday after mandatory minicamp. and his answers touched everything from his early comfort in New England to the one message that followed him out of the Eagles. After the trade, it was reported Brown left the Eagles a sign-off that read: “The best to ever play here. Always open.”.
Asked about that message at minicamp, Brown didn’t want to revisit the details. “I’m not gonna get into that,” he said. He then moved straight past it: “I appreciated my time in Philly. I’m where my feet are. That’s the only thing that matters.”
The Patriots clearly didn’t spend a steep price for Brown expecting him to keep looking backward. And even if he won’t play along with the story tied to that alleged Eagles message, his message of present focus was hard to miss.
On the field, the conversation shifted quickly—and this part sounded like the whole point of the offseason. After practicing with Drake Maye for a few days, Brown couldn’t stop talking about him.
Brown praised what stands out right away about Maye’s game, but he zeroed in on something deeper than talent: Maye’s ability to handle the mental burden of quarterbacking without making it look heavy. Brown’s tone made it clear he’s already seeing why the fit matters.
Maye was already one of the best quarterbacks in all of football last season, and Brown pointed to how little he needed help to prove himself—Maye came within just a few votes of winning the MVP award in his second season. Still, adding a receiver like Brown changes the equation.
With Brown now in the fold, the Patriots could move toward one of the top passing games in the NFL. Brown and Maye are building chemistry this offseason, and they have months to refine it before the season begins.
For teams trying to plan around New England, that timeline might be the real warning. Brown is closing the door on the Eagles chapter in public—but he’s opening up a new one with Maye that has plenty of time to grow.
