A 10-year-old child was allegedly found malnourished and confined inside a bedroom in a home in Iowa—one that held stark conditions and no furniture for the child to rest on. Andrew C. Warrington, 48, and Kellie J. Warrington, 47, were arrested after the allegation that they knowingly and secretly kept the child locked up for an extended period.

The charges filed against Andrew and Kellie include first-degree kidnapping, child endangerment, willful injury and neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. The child’s identity has not been publicly revealed because they are a minor; KWQC reported the child was 10 years old.

Court documents and affidavits described confinement that went beyond isolation. Authorities alleged the parents did not allow the child to use the bathroom. and deprived the child of light. food and water during the time trapped in the room. They also alleged the parents concealed the situation by not allowing the child to attend medical appointments or mental health appointments and by removing the child from church activities. as stated in the Scott County arrest affidavits viewed by Our Quad Cities.

The filings allege the lack of stimulation “for large periods of time [resulted] in both mental and physical torture” for the victim. The child was also said to have suffered head injuries during their time trapped in the room. according to court records viewed by Our Quad Cities. The affidavits further state, “Without medical intervention, (the child) was at risk of death.”.

Authorities learned of the situation and took action after the child was treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, according to KWQC. The current status of the child’s health has not been publicly reported.

The legal case moved quickly once authorities got involved. Andrew and Kellie were arrested on Friday, June 5, and were held at Scott County Jail on $2 million cash-only bonds as of Tuesday, June 9. Both are expected to attend a preliminary hearing on June 16.

What remains unclear is how authorities became aware of the situation and how long the investigation lasted before the arrests were made. It is also not currently clear whether Andrew and Kellie have entered pleas or retained legal counsel following their arrests. The Scott County Sheriff’s Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
