Pan’s Labyrinth Returns Oct. 9 in 3D and 4K

Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 dark fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth returns to theaters on October 9 for its 20th anniversary, featuring a new 4K restoration overseen by del Toro himself and the film’s first-ever 3D and HDR presentation.
By the time the new trailer hits. you can feel the countdown already starting—because “Pan’s Labyrinth” is coming back to theaters on October 9. and this time it’s not just a re-release. It’s a 20th anniversary return with a new 4K restoration overseen by Guillermo del Toro himself. plus a format shift that will land like a dare: the film will be available in 3D and HDR for the very first time this fall.
Set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. the story follows Ofelia (Ivana Baquero). an 11-year-old girl trapped between a brutal reality and a private. crimson dreamscape. Under the fascist rule of her stepfather. Captain Vidal (Sergi López). Ofelia navigates a perilous maze hidden in the woods—where nightmares don’t feel like something you watch from the outside. They feel like something you’re invited to step into.
The trailer’s new narration ties directly back to del Toro’s own words at the start of the film. In the promo. the Mexican filmmaker—now 61 years old—recites: “They say that a long time ago. in an underground realm. where there are no lies or pain. there lived a princess who dreamt of the human world.”.
Ofelia’s quest brings her face-to-face with the Pale Man and a mercurial Faun, both portrayed by creature-actor Doug Jones. The trailer avoids spoiling the experience. but the premise is enough to bring back the memory that has kept fans returning for years: “Pan’s Labyrinth” ultimately asks viewers to decide what did and didn’t happen to Ofelia in that dreamscape.
The awards legacy remains as formidable as ever. The 2006 film earned six Oscar nominations and three wins. including Best Cinematography for Guillermo Navarro. Best Art Direction for Eugenio Caballero. and Best Makeup for David Martí and Montse Ribé. Even two decades later. the craftsmanship that made it feel untouchably alive is part of why this return feels more than ceremonial.
This re-release is backed by Cineverse and Fathom Entertainment. It also includes stereoscopic 3D work from SDFX Studios, formerly known as Stereo D. For select theaters, audiences will also be able to watch “Pan’s Labyrinth” in Barco’s HDR format, designed to offer enhanced luminance and contrast.
There’s something about an anniversary re-release that can never quite promise the same jolt as the original—until you see what’s being offered here. With del Toro re-centering the story through his own narration. and the film arriving in 3D and HDR alongside its new 4K restoration. the return lands on a familiar idea with sharper edges: the line between refuge and imagination is still where the tension lives.
Whether you believe Ofelia truly discovers a magical kingdom beyond the trees—or whether that kingdom is her mind’s way of surviving the violence around her—“Pan’s Labyrinth” holds tight to its most enduring power: ambiguity that doesn’t feel like a gimmick, but like part of the story’s heartbeat.

Wait so it’s coming back in 3D?? I thought 3D was like gone forever lol. Guess I gotta rewatch it now.
This movie made me scared of woods for years. Also it says 4K restoration but I swear every “restored” movie just looks the same with brighter colors. Is HDR actually different or just marketing?
Nah I’m pretty sure Pan’s Labyrinth is on Netflix already? Like I’ve watched it like 3 times. October 9 for theaters feels weird like nobody asked for this. Unless they’re changing the ending or something.
I can’t believe it’s 20 years old, it still feels super dark. Captain Vidal… I remember thinking that guy was from some other movie too. The trailer narration quote about an underground realm sounds familiar like it’s from the beginning of the book or whatever, but maybe I’m mixing it up. Either way I’ll probably go see it just for the 3D/Pale Man scene even though I’m not sure I can handle that again.
