Overshown’s healthy offseason sparks hope for Cowboys defense
Overshown healthy – DeMarvion Overshown says being fully healthy through the offseason puts him on track to be his best yet after injuries limited him in 2023 and most of last season.
When DeMarvion Overshown missed his rookie season in 2023 with a torn ACL, the Dallas Cowboys lost one of the key pieces they hoped would shape their defense early. But when he returned, he quickly reminded the league what he can do.
Overshown went on to appear in 13 games, recording 90 tackles, five sacks, and an interception return for a touchdown. He also forced a fumble and recovered one, showcasing the kind of athletic, impact presence the Cowboys envisioned at linebacker before the next knee injury struck.
This time, it was another setback involving torn ligaments.. He wound up missing most of last season due to the recovery. but he did manage a five-game return without any further issues to carry into the offseason.. Now. with rehab behind him and no injury he’s currently rehabbing. Overshown believes the work he’s been able to do in full matters as much as anything.
On Thursday, he told Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com that the healthy offseason is exactly what he’s needed.. “Biggest blessing I can ask for,” Overshown said.. “I feel like everybody knows when I’m healthy, I’m one of the best linebackers in the league.. That’s not to toot my own horn. but the film and that stats speaks for itself when I’m on the field.. Being healthy is the number one way to stay on the field and be able to do what I do.”
He added: “The fact that I get to go through this whole offseason as a healthy man, and coming into training camp healthy, I feel like people ain’t seen my best yet. So, I know it’s going to be one of my best years.”
For Dallas, that matters because last season’s defensive struggles weren’t tied to a single absence. The Cowboys made numerous moves over the last few months in an effort to address the side of the ball, underscoring how much they wanted to fix what wasn’t working.
Overshown’s return to full health won’t solve everything on its own. But getting him back to the form he showed before the latest injury would still represent a major step forward for a unit looking for stability, speed, and playmaking in the middle.
