The 40-year-old spoke with reporters after the agreement was finalized, refusing to shut the door on the idea of playing past next season. He added that his attention is on the upcoming campaign.
In September, Ovechkin will be 41 and preparing for his 22nd NHL season. The longtime Capitals captain also said he believes the team is still a Stanley Cup contender, and he discussed with his wife the possibility of returning on either a one- or two-year deal.
His place in history is moving even while the future remains open. Ovechkin has 1,006 goals including the playoffs and is 10 markers away from Wayne Gretzky’s cumulative total of 1,116. He broke Gretzky’s regular-season record of 894 goals in April 2025, and he now sits at 929 goals across his 1,573-game career.

After missing the playoffs this season, the Capitals have added Jordan Kyrou from the St. Louis Blues and Alex Tuch from the Buffalo Sabres.
