OpenAI upgrades ChatGPT default GPT-5.5 Instant now

OpenAI has updated GPT-5.5 Instant, the default model in ChatGPT, to better track the intent behind a question, carry context across back-and-forths, handle complex prompts, and adapt when users clarify or push back—along with improved location-aware recommend

The moment you add one more condition to a question, the test begins: will ChatGPT keep up, or will it circle back with the same answer wearing a slightly different hat?

OpenAI says it has just improved how its most-used ChatGPT model—GPT-5.5 Instant—handles that kind of real-time friction. The company updated the model to be better at understanding context and adapting as you adjust your prompt with added clarifications or extra requirements.

The update follows an earlier change in May, when OpenAI made GPT-5.5 Instant ChatGPT’s default model. At the time, the company said GPT-5.5 Instant produced 52.5 percent fewer hallucinated statements during testing and 37.3 percent fewer factual errors.

This time, the focus is more on the back-and-forth itself. OpenAI says the upgraded GPT-5.5 Instant is better at identifying the underlying goal of a task or question. and it can carry context over across multiple exchanges. It’s also described as more capable at processing complex questions. and more likely to answer the multiple points a user wants addressed—without needing a total restart of the conversation.

When you correct the model midstream, OpenAI says it should adapt more effectively and deliver more relevant answers instead of repeating its older responses.

There are also changes aimed at the moments when location matters. OpenAI says the new GPT-5.5 Instant can understand location context more effectively. so it can surface relevant nearby options—for example. restaurant recommendations while you’re traveling. The model can also provide product recommendations and business information. and it may show images when the chatbot decides they’d be helpful.

OpenAI frames the overall experience as an upgrade in how the responses feel and read. In its announcement, the company says responses should feel “more tasteful and cohesive,” with more natural formatting—intended to make results look and feel less templated than chatbot replies often do.

Put together, the message is straightforward: the default model in ChatGPT is being tuned not just to answer, but to stay aligned with what you’re trying to do—even when your request evolves while you’re still talking.
