OpenAI pushes ChatGPT ‘super app’ amid big strategy shift

For weeks, ChatGPT has been doing one job: answering questions. Now OpenAI is reportedly trying to turn that into something much bigger—one personal “gateway” built around coding tools and AI agents, rolled into a revamped version of ChatGPT in the coming weeks.
The Financial Times reports that OpenAI’s goal is to make ChatGPT more competitive, especially with Anthropic, with business customers in mind. The push also comes with a sharper business timeline: getting closer to profitability before an IPO.
That means more than polish. The plan, as described in the coverage, is to turn ChatGPT into a starting point that draws free users toward products they might actually pay for—specifically coding product Codex.
A senior OpenAI employee quoted by the Financial Times put it bluntly: “Chat is dead.”
Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI’s core product and platform, described the direction as a new kind of personal assistant. He said OpenAI is working toward a product “where you have your own personal agent that is capable of helping you … across everything in your life. be it personally or at work.”.
The idea is not brand-new. Reports about OpenAI’s “super app” ambitions have been circulating since last year. In March. The Wall Street Journal reported that the plans represent a major strategy shift after OpenAI launched a variety of standalone products in 2025. As part of that shift, OpenAI executives were said to be abandoning “side quests” like video generator Sora.
Taken together, the pieces point to a company trying to re-center its biggest asset. ChatGPT is no longer just a destination. It’s supposed to become the place users enter—then, ideally, where they stay long enough to choose paid tools.
With a revamped version of ChatGPT expected within the coming weeks. OpenAI is essentially betting that the next leap won’t be measured only in answers. but in how tightly it can embed agents and coding help into everyday work and personal tasks—while also edging toward the kind of revenue momentum that could matter before any IPO.

Chat is dead?? So what, it’ll just talk less and charge more?
So they’re turning ChatGPT into like an app store for coding? I don’t even code and it’s still gonna try to upsell me to Codex or whatever. Sounds like a money grab timeline before an IPO, shocker.
Wait “personal gateway” means it’ll basically control your computer right? Like click stuff and do tasks? That seems scary if it’s “across everything in your life” but ok sure. Also Sora is being abandoned? I thought that was the coolest part.
Honestly I’m confused bc half the time these reports say it’s for business customers and the other half it’s for personal stuff. If ChatGPT is “the starting point” then where does Anthropic fit in… like are they both just trying to become the same thing? And they said profitability before an IPO like that matters more than actually making it useful. Feels like they’re swapping features around, not really fixing anything.
