When police were called to an apartment in San Diego for a medical emergency, the 911 call came only after minutes of something much stranger—and deadlier—had already played out.
Michaela Rylaarsdam, an OnlyFans fetish creator, was sentenced to four years in prison for the death of her client, Michael Dale, after a BDSM session recorded for paid subscribers turned fatal.
Rylaarsdam was initially charged with murder over the deadly 2023 encounter. But under a plea deal with prosecutors, she pleaded guilty last month to one count of involuntary manslaughter.
Prosecutors said Rylaarsdam continued recording while Dale lay with his head wrapped in plastic that was sealed with duct tape for at least eight minutes, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. During that time, they say she also used a vibrator.
After Dale began to turn blue, Rylaarsdam called police and attempted to perform CPR once he showed signs of severe distress.
The two had met in March through a website used for escort and stripping services, according to a court affidavit. Investigators alleged Dale paid Rylaarsdam more than $11,000 during the course of several weeks to talk to him and perform acts of bondage at his home.
On April 17, 2023, Rylaarsdam arrived for another session that she recorded for her OnlyFans account. Investigators said Dale asked to be wrapped “like a mummy” with plastic wrap and to have a pair of women’s boots glued to his feet.
Detectives, using a video found on her phone, said the footage showed Rylaarsdam masturbating next to Dale as he lay wrapped in plastic. The affidavit said the video was taken minutes before the 911 call that day.
The San Diego district attorney’s office said it weighed the totality of the evidence when reaching the plea deal with Rylaarsdam, along with input from the victim’s family. “The victim’s family was satisfied with the resolution,” the district attorney’s office said in a statement.
The case has left a stark question hanging over what happened in that apartment: the line between consensual adult content and a situation that quickly became irreversible. What prosecutors described as continued recording and the events documented in the minutes leading up to the 911 call are now part of the basis for Rylaarsdam’s prison sentence.
