Poll puts One Nation ahead as Hanson grows powerful

For decades, Pauline Hanson has been on the fringe of politics. Sometimes mocked, often ignored, occasionally courted. Even from that position she’s been influential – her presence can be felt in our immigration policies, dating back to John Howard. But her power and her popularity have never been greater than they are today. A recent poll has One Nation as the most popular party in the country, surpassing Labor in primary support. So just how possible is an Australia governed by One Nation? Today, host
of The Conversation’s The Making of One Nation podcast Ashlynne McGhee discusses the party’s popularity and what it will try to do with it. Wild that One Nation is “ahead” now…
So is this saying Labor is done or what? I swear every time I hear Hanson it’s about immigration but then people act surprised again lol. Also the “poll” word is doing a lot of work.
I don’t get it, Pauline Hanson has been “fringe” for like forever, so why is everyone suddenly acting like she’s the whole future? Isn’t John Howard the one who started the immigration stuff? Like One Nation didn’t just magically get popular overnight… or did the poll mean something else?
I listened to bits of this podcast and I’m just like… how are they measuring “primary support” like that’s the only thing that matters? If One Nation is growing powerful, it’s gonna affect everything, immigration, jobs, all of it. But half the time polls are wrong anyway, and people vote based on one headline. Also the comparison to John Howard felt kinda weird to me, like they’re saying everyone is to blame except the actual party running.
