Onana nears Trabzonspor return on loan from United

Andre Onana is close to rejoining Trabzonspor on a season-long loan from Manchester United, with talks focused on a straight loan and no option to buy. The deal comes after 33 appearances for Trabzonspor last season, as United look to reshape a goalkeeping gro
Andre Onana’s next move looks set to be a familiar one — back to Trabzonspor.
Manchester United are close to agreeing goalkeeper Andre Onana’s return to the Turkish Super Lig club on a season-long loan. The key points in the current discussions are straightforward: United. Trabzonspor and the 30-year-old’s representatives are finalising the details on what is set to be a straight loan. without any option to buy.
Onana was expected to go back to Carrington for pre-season training after last season’s loan spell. which saw him make 33 appearances for Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig and also win the Turkish Cup. The bigger issue now is how that loan would line up with his playing time — Trabzonspor have been eager to extend his stay. and there is no real prospect of him playing regularly again at United.
That lack of a clear role at Old Trafford is a sharp change from where Onana began. He joined United from Inter Milan in July 2023 for an initial €51million (£43.9m. $57.4m) plus €4m in add-ons. stepping in as United’s No 1 after replacing David de Gea. Over his first two campaigns, Onana started 72 of United’s 76 Premier League matches.
But the picture shifted at the start of this season under former head coach Ruben Amorim. when Onana lost his place. United later moved to add cover at the position on transfer deadline day. signing goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for an initial fee of €21m plus €4m in add-ons. After that, Onana became surplus to requirements.
Even so, his record for United remains substantial. The Cameroonian has made 102 appearances for the club at Old Trafford, keeping 24 clean sheets. His contract runs until 2028.
The wider sense inside United is that they want to refresh their goalkeeping department this summer. Back-up Altay Bayindir is also attracting interest in his native Turkey.
There is more movement possible beyond Onana. Radek Vitek, 22, could also depart either permanently or on loan, seeking regular playing time after impressing on loan at Championship club Bristol City.
With the details now being finalised around a straight Trabzonspor loan — and with no option to buy — the question for United becomes how quickly the position stabilises. For Trabzonspor. the timing is the point: they have wanted to keep Onana because they believe he fits their immediate needs. at a moment when United’s plan has left him searching for minutes elsewhere.
If the agreement is completed, it will mark another chapter for a goalkeeper whose recent success in Turkey — 33 appearances and the Turkish Cup — has already made him a known quantity.

Season-long loan no buy option… so basically he’s just renting him to Turkey? Weird.
I don’t get it, he was playing great for them, right? Then Amorim bench him and now he’s going back to Trabzonspor. Sounds like United just didn’t want him.
Wait, so is this saying he’s not gonna play at United at all? Because if he’s still No 1 like the article says he was… then how could he lose his place? I think it’s a money thing honestly.
Them saying “no real prospect of him playing regularly again” at Old Trafford makes it sound like they straight up broke his career lol. Also why did they sign that Senne Lammens guy then? Like, did they already know this was coming or are they just panicking? And £43.9m add ons… that’s a lot for someone to end up back in Turkey.
