As she described the film’s core idea—how relationships don’t always end overnight—she also shared the personal truth that helped shape it. For her, the “last straw” wasn’t a slow fade. It was a single exchange during her birthday in 2020.
Wilde and Jason Sudeikis originally got together in 2011. After nearly a decade together, they ended their engagement in 2020, going their separate ways. They also have two children, Daisy and Otis.
But during her conversation on Call Her Daddy, Wilde didn’t dwell on the timeline. She went straight to the drive home. She said she and Sudeikis had been having “a rough time” and that they’d been on a “real bumpy. bumpy ride.” Then. as they were driving home from her birthday party—hosted by friends—she remembered asking. “Did you get me a birthday present?”.
Wilde said Sudeikis responded, “What would I get you, Olivia? I don’t know you.”
She told Cooper the moment landed because the answer wasn’t wrong. “We didn’t know each other anymore,” she said.
Wilde also said the breakup wasn’t just sad—it was clarifying.
