Olivia Miles injury update after Lynx star exits win early

SAN FRANCISCO ― Minnesota Lynx rookie point guard Olivia Miles was injured during the Lynx’s Aug. 19 game against the Golden State Valkyries.

Miles had another spectacular performance for the Lynx as she tallied 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds before she left the game with an apparent ankle injury.

The 23-year-old was defending Valkyries guard Veronica Burton when she awkwardly planted her foot, appearing to roll her ankle when she stepped on teammate Napheesa Collier’s foot while defending a pass. She hobbled her way to the baseline before falling to the ground in pain with 4:37 left in the game.

Miles was down on the ground for a couple of minutes, surrounded by coaches and teammates. She was eventually helped off the floor by the Lynx training staff, as they helped her limp to the bench.

Miles did not return for the remainder of the game.

“She did tweak it but I don’t have any idea where it’s at,” Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve told reporters. “I haven’t seen the play yet. Obviously we’re hoping that she’s OK.”

Miles did not speak with reporters postgame but did join in the postgame press conference by asking Kayla McBride about her Stephen Curry “night-night” celebration.

“Well, if you were here for the entire thing, I’ve already said that,” McBride joked with Miles. “But Steph Curry is my favorite player. You know, obviously in his house (Chase Center), I’ve been to Oracle (Arena). I’ve watched the Warriors over the years, and it was just a competitive moment. Taking advantage of it, I thought it was a moment that really broke the game. Two minutes left. I think it put us up 11. So, just embracing that moment. I also realized that I moved up and I passed Becky (Hammon on the all-time 3-pointers list). So I just kind of (had) a hooper moment. I don’t know. I can’t explain it. Just kind of came out of me.”

After the postgame press conference, Miles had a noticeable limp as she went back to the locker room without shoes on, just barely putting pressure on her ankle. She seemed in good spirits after the game.

The Lynx led 63-55 at the time of Miles’ injury and were maintaining a double-digit lead for most of the game. Minnesota would go on to win the game 77-66. McBride added 20 points, while Collier scored 18 points and had eight rebounds.

Both players had nothing but positive remarks for Miles. McBride isn’t surprised by Miles’ extensive bag of tricks anymore. Mostly.

“Not anymore. I’m still like, I don’t know,” McBride said, trying to find the words. “She’s so present. I think sometimes … but overall no. She’s just so talented and poised. She’s just a hooper. She loves the moment. She loves to compete. She relishes the moments and you can feel that. I’m just excited to see what she does next.”

There was a behind-the-back, wraparound pass that Miles threw to McBride, who cashed in a 3. That one really had Collier in awe.

“I’m still surprised. That backwards pass was nice,” Collier told reporters. “I guess not surprised but just like, in awe. Like surprised in a good way. It’s fun to watch.”
