CHICAGO − More than a few white pairs of sneakers were ruined from muddy fields during Lollapalooza on Saturday, Aug. 1. But that didn’t stop Olivia Dean from spreading her message of love.
The “Man I Need” musician surprised fans with guest Sam Fender toward the end of her 90-minute set on Day 3 of the music festival. The duo performed “Rein Me In,” which broke the previously held 73-year-old record for the longest-running No. 1 song in U.K. history, spending 19 at the top of charts. Dean said the Lollapalooza set was the first time the two had performed the song live in the U.S.
Radiating like a disco ball, Dean, 27, was one of two headliners for the evening, with Blackpink member Jennie taking the other main stage. Dean last performed at Lollapalooza in 2024 to a crowd of a little more than 1,500.
The festival’s start time was delayed by four hours amid overnight rain and flash flooding. Instead of opening at 11 a.m. local time, the festival welcomed guests at 3 p.m. Several early afternoon sets were canceled.

At a muddy Lollapalooza, fans were ‘looking to the bright side’
The rain didn’t bring down the mood for Sophia Jakubowski and Sydnee Erickson. The 24-year-olds, both from an hour south of Chicago, had four-day passes to the festival and said the rain delay didn’t bother them.
“Our theme for the weekend was looking to the bright side of things, so we’re really trying to do that,” Erickson told USA TODAY.
At around 4 p.m., the duo said they were looking forward to several performances, notably Dean.
“She radiates joy. She blew up out of nowhere, rightfully so. She just seems like a genuinely amazing person,” Jakubowski said.
Erickson added: “Her music is just uplifting. You can dance. I feel like everyone could enjoy her performance.”
