PHOENIX — Shohei Ohtani kept the momentum in his own hands as the Dodgers chased a win under a late, tightening scoreboard. He came up with a double, a triple and two RBIs, finishing the night as Los Angeles survived a scare to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Ohtani, a four-time MVP, has been carrying his streak into almost every at-bat recently. Over his last six games, he’s hit 12-for-26 (.462), including two doubles, a triple and two homers. The Dodgers, meanwhile, are rolling—Los Angeles has won 15 of its last 19 games.

Freddie Freeman gave the early spark that set the tone. In the first inning, he launched his ninth homer of the season into the right-field seats, scoring Ohtani. Ohtani had led off with a double down the right-field line, and Freeman’s night was already underway—part of his three-hit performance.

The second inning turned the game into something less manageable for Arizona. Ohtani delivered again, this time a two-run triple to right that made it 4-0. Los Angeles kept adding pressure after that stretch: Andy Pages tacked on a sacrifice fly. and Mookie Betts followed with an RBI single in the seventh to push the lead to 6-2.

Arizona refused to fade. In the seventh inning, Nolan Arenado connected for a two-run double to cut the deficit to 6-4. Then Pavin Smith walked with the bases loaded, making it 6-5 and bringing the tying run right into the frame. Will Klein came out to finish the sequence and coaxed a groundout from rookie Tommy Troy to end the threat.

With the game on the line in the ninth, Tanner Scott took over and didn’t let the final moments stretch. He worked around a one-out single from Ildemaro Vargas to earn his sixth save in seven chances.

Arizona’s starting point wasn’t steady either. D-backs right-hander Mike Soroka settled down after a rough start. giving up four runs on six hits and a walk over six innings while striking out six. The Diamondbacks did strike back with power: Corbin Carroll hit a solo homer in the third that bounced off the top of the left-field wall and into the bullpen.

On the mound for Los Angeles, lefty Eric Lauer gave Arizona a different look in his second start with the Dodgers after being acquired in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays on May 17. Lauer allowed two runs on five hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings.

The night ended with Arizona looking ahead to Wednesday. The Diamondbacks send RHP Zac Gallen (3-4, 5.16 ERA) to the mound while the Dodgers counter with RHP Shohei Ohtani (5-2, 0.82).

  1. Wait they were up 6-2 and still almost lost? Arizona always finds a way to make it stressful. Ohtani doing doubles and triples like it’s nothing though.

  2. I read somewhere Ohtani’s streak is like 20 games or whatever so this checks out. Also Tanner Scott got the save so that means he pitched the whole game right? Idk how baseball works that well but 6-5 scares me.

  3. Freeman’s ninth homer already… that’s wild. And Soroka “settled down” but still gave up four runs so like, how bad was the rough start?? Also I can’t believe they had a lead and then Arizona loaded the bases like immediately, that’s always the worst part of watching. Anyway go Dodgers.
