Freddie Freeman laughs at Soroka’s pick-off plan

Freddie Freeman couldn’t believe Michael Soroka repeatedly tried to pick him off in the fifth inning, then delivered a two-run homer and helped the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Freddie Freeman has 10 stolen bases since suffering a nasty ankle sprain in September of 2024. Across 2,236 regular-season games, he’s recorded 106 stolen bases—numbers that don’t exactly scream “flight risk.”

So when Michael Soroka started throwing over to keep tabs on the Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman, Freeman’s reaction was instant, loud, and—judging by what played out in the fifth inning—plain disbelief.

Soroka. the right-handed Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher who spent four years with Freeman on the Atlanta Braves. attempted to pick off the 2024 World Series MVP multiple times in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s National League West matchup. Freeman couldn’t understand why anyone would consider him a threat to swipe a bag.

He broke into hearty laughter, the kind of warmth that has defined him across so much of his career. Freeman even helped paint the moment with production: the 2020 MVP and three-time Silver Slugger crushed a two-run homer in the top of the first inning.

Freeman did not steal a base in this game. But his night was far from quiet. After his tone-setting 394-foot blast, he collected two additional hits as the Dodgers came away with a 6-5 victory.

That result mattered quickly. LA, now 39-22, evened up its series with the Diamondbacks and has won 15 of its last 19 games. Freeman’s bat has hardly cooled off. either. with a .274/.360/.475/.835 slash line that includes nine home runs and 32 RBIs this season—good for the kind of steadiness left-handed hitters dream about in the middle of a long campaign.

Even with limited base-path threat since the September 2024 ankle sprain, Freeman still has a way of making pitchers pay. Soroka learned it the hard way. And if Freeman’s laughter is any hint, he’ll remember the attempted pick-offs long after the inning ended.

  1. I don’t get why pitchers waste time picking him off if he’s not even stealing. Like the article said ankle sprain but then he still got stuff done so… idk.

  2. Freddie’s stolen bases don’t scream risk? That’s funny because my cousin says Freeman is always on the bases. Also Soroka used to be on the Braves so maybe he was trying to mess with him?

  3. Two-run homer after the pick-off attempts sounds like retaliation lol. And Dodgers are 39-22 now? feels like they been winning forever. Also 394 feet is kinda sus like was it wind or something? People be acting like ankle sprain doesn’t matter but then it kinda does? Messy.
