On Chicago’s South Side, the Barack Obama Presidential Center is preparing for its spotlight moment: a grand opening ceremony set for June 18 and meant to roll into the Juneteenth weekend, June 19-21.

The Obama Foundation on June 16 unveiled the performance lineup for Thursday’s dedication—billing the acts as “global icons.” The ceremony is expected to be livestreamed. with the foundation describing it as a celebration of “the values that shaped the Obama presidency. ” including “the power to create change.” The event will be available starting at noon ET/9 a.m. PT.

For viewers hoping for a headline guest list, the center’s stage credentials are unmistakable. Confirmed performers include Bruce Springsteen. Christina Aguilera. Common. Eddie Vedder. Jennifer Hudson. John Legend. Marsai Martin. Marc Anthony. Stevie Wonder. Tems. and The Roots. U2’s Bono and The Edge are also listed among the performers.

The biggest political omission has been the one that refuses to fade. President Donald Trump. who bashed the center’s estimated $850 million price tag as a “total disaster” in a social media post. is not expected to attend the ceremony. Even so, the Obama Foundation told the reporter that Trump is “welcome” to visit and tour the grounds.

The 19-acre campus—set on Chicago’s South Side—is designed to be more than a museum stop. It includes a Chicago Public Library branch. a playground. a sledding hill. a cafe and restaurant. an athletic center. and community spaces. A ticketed museum on the campus is also planned, with a format that breaks from the traditional presidential library model.

Putting the pieces together, the sequence feels deliberate: a high-profile musical lineup for a livestreamed dedication; a broad campus built around community amenities; and an invitation extended to a president who criticized the project’s cost, even as he’s absent from the stage lineup.

As the calendar turns to Juneteenth weekend. the center’s grand opening is positioned not just as a ceremonial launch. but as a public statement—one anchored by the people scheduled to perform. the spaces already under development. and the tension that still follows the project’s $850 million price tag.

  1. Obama center already had Obama stuff and now they’re doing June 18 like a big TV special. I don’t even get why Trump isn’t going, like he’s the president he should show up to “support” or whatever. Also $850 million sounds insane even if it’s for libraries or whatever.

  2. Wait… Juneteenth weekend and it’s a “values of Obama presidency” thing but they’re listing like rock stars and pop singers. Isn’t this kind of political marketing disguised as music? I saw U2 in there and thought Bono was gonna say something about Biden or something? Idk I’m just confused.

  3. It’s basically a museum + playground + sled hill and a bunch of famous people, which is honestly kinda genius marketing. But I’m still stuck on Trump calling it a disaster… like if it’s so bad why are they acting like it’s the biggest event. And the livestream timing being at noon ET like that matters to anyone outside Chicago lol. Also Common and John Legend don’t mean policy changes magically happen, ya know?
