By then, the NYPD was already dealing with what it described as reckless and dangerous behavior.

According to the NYPD, across multiple locations around the city, 56 people were taken into custody. Of those, 15 were arrested and 41 were released with criminal court summonses. The department said charges included assault on a police officer. criminal possession of a weapon (knife). reckless endangerment. criminal mischief. disorderly conduct. resisting arrest. obstruction of governmental administration. and trademark counterfeiting.

Ten members of the NYPD were injured during the disruption, including one officer who was hit in the head with a glass bottle.

The Knicks win was historic in its own right—the largest NBA Finals comeback in league history—bringing fans closer to the franchise’s first NBA title since 1973. For many in the city, Game 4 felt like the kind of night New York holds onto. For the police responding to the aftermath, it became a test of public safety during peak emotion.

In a statement, the NYPD said: “This is an exciting time for the Knicks and for fans across New York City. The NYPD wants New Yorkers to be able to enjoy these celebrations, but our primary responsibility is to ensure that everyone can do so safely.”

It added: “Once again, there were large crowds of people who engaged in incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior last night both during and after the game. This demonstrates exactly why the NYPD has increased our presence in and around Madison Square Garden.”

The game-day fallout also came with another layer of tension: a point of contention between the city and Knicks owner James Dolan over the security of watch parties. Those watch parties were canceled at the 11th hour before Game 4 after they had been advertised across social media. according to the report.

It is not known if watch parties will be held for Game 5, which takes place on Saturday night in San Antonio. If the Spurs win, Game 6 would return to Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, June 16.
