A budget phone was supposed to arrive on schedule. Instead, the plan stopped—because the most basic ingredient got too expensive.

Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis said on X that there won’t be a successor to the CMF Phone 2 Pro coming this year. He tied the decision directly to RAM prices. writing that the company was working on a follow-up. but “with memory prices where they are right now. we can’t build a phone that feels like a genuine step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF.” With those economics in place. Nothing decided “not to launch a new CMF phone this year.”.

The announcement lands in the same month as a broader warning from within Nothing itself. Last week. Nothing CEO and co-founder Carl Pei said the RAM shortage has already reshaped the cost structure of the company’s mid-range line. For Phone 4A. Pei said. “memory costs doubled between when we decided to build the device and when it launched. ” and then “They’ve doubled again since.” In his telling. “memory is now the most expensive component in a smartphone.”.

Evangelidis’ post makes clear that this isn’t a pause on innovation so much as a retreat from one category at one price point. While there won’t be a new CMF phone this year. he said CMF still has “several new products launching as well as some entirely new categories.” He also hinted that the smartphone launch season at Nothing isn’t over yet.

Nothing isn’t standing alone in this squeeze. Earlier this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the situation has become unsustainable, announcing Apple will be raising prices—an acknowledgment that RAM and other component costs aren’t behaving like normal inputs anymore.

What makes the CMF decision feel different isn’t the existence of supply pressure. It’s the directness of the trade-off: Nothing is saying it can’t deliver a “genuine step forward” without making the phone too expensive for its target market. In a market built on tight margins for value-focused devices. a component that suddenly becomes the cost anchor forces hard choices—cancel. redesign. or raise the sticker price and risk losing the audience the product was meant for.
