Citi Field felt different on Wednesday—louder, warmer, and shaped by a song that doesn’t belong to New York.
During the first of a doubleheader between the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets. Norwegian supporters brought their famous “row” chant into the ballpark and pulled local fans into it as the gameday crowd swelled. Before the chant really took hold. the stands were also doing a Conga Line-style dance. transforming the bleachers into something that looked like a longship.
The noise and the togetherness were the story for a lot of the day—but on the field, it wasn’t kind to the home side. The Cubs dominated the Mets 10-3, with Dansby Swanson delivering the headline moment: two home runs, including a grand slam in the 8th inning to seal the win.
The second game of the doubleheader was scheduled to begin at 7:10 ET, and Mets fans will be hoping the atmosphere can carry over—especially if the Norwegian supporters show up again.
For Norway, the energy isn’t just a Citi Field thing. The same month their fans have been turning the trip into a statement, Norway also beat Senegal 3-2 at MetLife Stadium. The next stop is New England, where Norway is set for a highly anticipated battle against France on Friday.
