When passengers booked Norwegian Viva sailings looked ahead to late 2027 and early 2028, Norwegian Cruise Line has now hit pause on about three months of trips.

In letters sent to guests, the cruise line said it was scrapping planned departures between Nov. 1, 2027, and Jan. 23, 2028. For travelers who had been expecting those voyages. the change comes with a clear offer: full refunds and future cruise credits equal to 10% of their fare. along with alternative sailings.

Norwegian Viva was scheduled to sail from Lisbon, Portugal, to San Juan, Puerto Rico, before homeporting in San Juan, according to CruiseMapper. Under the revised plan, the ship will redeploy to Miami.

Norwegian said in the guest letters that it tries to keep original itineraries in place. but modifications are sometimes made to “optimize voyages due to changing port availability.” The company added: “We are committed to providing exceptional vacation experiences. both aboard our ships and by taking our guests to some of the most sought-out destinations around the world.”.

In the same correspondence. Norwegian told passengers it was sharing alternative options and thanked them for their understanding as the deployment shifts. “While we try to maintain original itineraries as much as possible. at times modifications are made to optimize voyages due to changing port availability. ” the company wrote. It later added: “We truly appreciate your understanding as we continue to evolve our deployment in ways that create even more memorable journeys ahead. ” and said it “look[s] forward to welcoming you on board soon.”.

Cruise cancellations are relatively rare, but they do happen. The cruise line did not cite a specific operational reason in the material provided, though the broader industry has seen cancellations tied to ship charters or when vessels need dry dock maintenance or refurbishment.

Carnival Cruise Line, for example, canceled 11 cruises aboard its Carnival Firenze ship earlier this year. Those voyages were scheduled to sail in October and November, and Carnival cited changes in itinerary plans.

For Norwegian Viva passengers now affected by the shift. the immediate questions are less about why the departures were dropped and more about what happens next: refund logistics. how the credit will be applied. and whether the alternative sailings align with the dates and routes they originally booked.
