A trophy should last longer than a single mistake, but Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s Offensive Player of the Year hardware didn’t. The issue was small enough to notice at a glance, and big enough to demand a redo.
As the offensive player of the year trophy made its way into Smith-Njigba’s hands, it arrived with a typo. It appeared to say “Defensive Player of the Year,” an error that the NFL says it is already working to correct.
On Tuesday. chief NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league “made the mistake” in a message delivered via Jayna Bardahl of The Athletic. He added. “We sincerely apologize to Jaxon for the error and are in the process of creating and shipping him a new trophy.” McCarthy continued: “Of course. like the teams he played against this year. we know how great an offensive player he is. We just had a problem spelling it.”.
The NFL’s position is that the trophy doesn’t actually label Smith-Njigba as defensive. Instead. the league says the word reads “oefensive. ” with an “e” used where it should be an “f.” Still. the end result for anyone looking at the trophy is the same kind of problem you can’t fix by simply smoothing it over. The NFL is treating it as a replacement situation, not a correction.
There’s no backspace button for something like this. The only way to do it right, by the league’s own standard, is to send out a new trophy.
And with the corrected piece on the way, a possible path for the extra hardware has been floated: auction it off, with the proceeds going to the charity of Smith-Njigba’s choice.
