Newcastle accept Barcelona £70m for Anthony Gordon

Newcastle accept – Barcelona have agreed a £70million deal with Newcastle for Anthony Gordon, with the winger set to begin his Barcelona medical on Thursday in Catalonia. The Magpies now turn to finding a replacement, with Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo on a shortlist as sportin

Anthony Gordon will fly to Catalonia and start his Barcelona medical on Thursday after the Spanish champions agreed a £70million deal with Newcastle for the 25-year-old.

The move has been moving fast. Barcelona edged ahead of Bayern Munich and Premier League rivals, including Liverpool, after sporting director Deco met with Gordon’s representatives on Monday. Talks then accelerated on Tuesday once official contact with Newcastle began.

Newcastle have negotiated a package worth in excess of £70m, including bonuses and a future percentage of any sale. With the agreement now in place, Newcastle’s next priority is signing a replacement.

Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, 21, is understood to be on the shortlist.

Gordon’s exit also reshapes Newcastle’s selection headache. He finished the season as Newcastle’s top scorer with 18 goals. but he did not feature in the final six games amid growing speculation over his future. Boss Eddie Howe acknowledged the decision-making at the time had been influenced by the uncertainty around his future.

There is also money changing hands for Everton. Everton have a sell-on clause that will see them receive 15 per cent of the profit after they sold Gordon to Newcastle for £45m in 2023.

Barcelona’s path to the deal had its own fork in the road. Gordon’s camp had spoken to both Barcelona and Bayern, with the framework of personal terms with the Bundesliga club in place for several weeks. But Bayern would not go beyond their £60m valuation.

Liverpool’s interest has been longstanding, yet they have shifted attention elsewhere. They are focusing on RB Leipzig’s £85m-rated Yan Diomande, with Paris St Germain’s Bradley Barcola another option.

Gordon’s near-miss with Liverpool still lingers in Newcastle’s recent memory. Two years ago. a medical was set up in Germany while he was on international duty at Euro 2024. only for Newcastle to pull the plug after choosing to sell Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest to solve their PSR deficit. That context matters because Newcastle do not have a sell-on clause for Gordon’s prospective replacement. leaving the club to plan purely around their own next step rather than any additional future windfall.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are already looking beyond Gordon. They still intend to discuss a deal for Marcus Rashford with Manchester United this week, aiming to secure another loan rather than a permanent move immediately. They have until June 15 to trigger a clause to buy the England forward for £26m.

The sequence is stark: Newcastle accept a £70million deal that takes their top scorer out of the squad just as the season ends. Barcelona secure their man. and the Magpies now have to move quickly before pre-season becomes a scramble for a replacement. By Thursday, Gordon’s next chapter begins—while Newcastle’s recruitment clock starts counting down.

  1. So Barcelona really just poached him? I thought he was staying at Newcastle lol. Also why did they stop playing him the last games?

  2. Does this mean Newcastle got 70m cash or like “up to” 70m with bonuses? Sounds like one of those deals where everyone pretends it’s exact. And the Everton sell-on thing confuses me because that’s like 15% of what profit? Either way I’m annoyed for Toon fans.

  3. Barcelona medical on Thursday… so basically he’s gone already. Not shocked though, they move like lightning. Newcastle are acting like they’re replacing him right now but Lille kid sounds like a random FIFA signing. Also I read somewhere Liverpool wanted him but now they’re “focusing on RB…” whatever that means. If Bayern offered 60 then why would Gordon even wait? Feels messy.
