At about 6 a.m. Thursday, Daniel Jolly, 59, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was arrested in New Hampshire in connection with a murder case that has haunted investigators for more than three decades.
Maine State Police said on Facebook that Jolly is charged with murder in the 1993 homicide of Maxine Bitomski, 73, of Kittery, Maine. Police said Jolly will remain in New Hampshire until he can be extradited to Maine.
Bitomski was found dead in her home on the afternoon of Jan. 16, 1993. Maine State Police and the Kittery Police Department have spent years investigating the case. and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy the day after Bitomski’s death. Police said the cause of death has not been released because court documents are sealed.
Jolly knew Bitomski through his job at Medical Market, a Portsmouth-based medical supply company that provided oxygen equipment and services for her prior to her death, police said.
The renewed push toward an arrest began in 2021, when Maine state detectives began reexamining the case. Police said their renewed efforts eventually led to Jolly’s arrest.
“This arrest reflects the determination and commitment of investigators who never stopped working this case,” said Maine State Police Lt. Tom Pickering. “The work completed by current and retired Maine State Police Detectives. members of the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory and the Kittery Police Department over the past 33 years was instrumental in bringing this case to this point.”.
In the days ahead, the case is expected to continue moving through multiple jurisdictions. Maine State Police and New Hampshire authorities, along with local departments in Kittery and Portsmouth, said they are continuing to investigate the matter.
