Netherlands beat Tunisia, set Morocco showdown in 2026

Netherlands face – The Netherlands clinched the top spot in Group J with a 3-1 win over Tunisia on June 25, booking a Round of 32 clash against Morocco on Monday, June 29 at 9 p.m. ET in Monterrey, Mexico. The victory also capped a tournament attendance milestone: 3,605,357 fans

Kansas City, Mo. — The Netherlands celebrated for a brief moment after beating Tunisia 3-1 on Thursday, June 25, and finishing top of Group J. The relief was real, and so was the fatigue it tried to hide. Because the job after the group stage is different—sharper, colder, and it starts Monday.

The Dutch topped the group with a victory that came early and never truly loosened. An own goal gave them the lead in the third minute. when Denzel Dumfries drove a low cross toward the middle of the box and Tunisia’s Ellyes Skhiri. trying to clear it. instead passed the ball into the back of the net.

“I’m really happy about it because that’s what our aim was,” Netherlands center back Jan Paul van Hecke said. “We said to each other before the game that we needed to be really good today because we wanted to be top of the group.”

They doubled the margin four minutes later. Brian Brobbey converted after a Virgil van Dijk headed pass set him up inside the attacking rhythm the Netherlands controlled for much of the first half. The play began with a free kick.

Tunisia pulled one back in the 54th minute through Hazem Mastouri, who scored via a header from Hannibal Mejbri’s right foot. But for the home stretch, the Netherlands carried their composure instead of letting the Orange-filled stands at Arrowhead Stadium rattle the game.

Eight minutes after Tunisia’s goal, the Netherlands restored their two-goal lead when van Hecke scored with a header. Netherlands keeper Bart Verbruggen said the team never lost its inner steadiness even when conceding.

“I didn’t see confidence shake,” Verbruggen said. “It was obviously disappointing, you never want to concede. We’ve got a strong mentality in the group and that we kept momentum, kept control of the game.”

The Round of 32 game is already taking shape. On Monday, June 29 at 9 p.m. ET, the Netherlands will face Morocco in Monterrey, Mexico.

No. 7 ranked Morocco and No. 8 Netherlands both carry the kind of expectations that only grow in knockout football. This is one of the standout first-round matchups, and both sides are pursuing a run to the final.

“It’s going to be a nice battle,” Brobbey said. “I think we are going to be ready for it.”

Morocco finished second in Group C with seven points, tied with group-winner Brazil. The South American team advanced on the goal differential tiebreaker.

The meeting also carries memory. It is the first matchup between the two nations since a friendly in 2017. The last time they met at a World Cup. during the 1994 tournament in the U.S. the Netherlands defeated Morocco 2-1 in a group-stage game—also played on June 29. Thirty-two years later, the calendar lines up again, and the stakes have changed from qualification to elimination.

“It’s game on,” van Hecke said. “Now, the big games come.”

There was one more reminder, outside the field lines, that the tournament is arriving at a different level of scale. The 2026 World Cup attendance record has already been broken, with 3,605,357 fans—surpassing the previous high set during the FIFA World Cup USA 1994.

The Netherlands’ short travel also became part of the story at Kansas City. They set their base camp in Kansas City and had only a 15-minute drive from their hotel to Arrowhead Stadium for the final group-stage match. Verbruggen said the routine made a difference.

“We didn’t travel so it was nice,” Verbruggen said. “We know the climate here and we’ve trained on the pitches and we’ve trained in this weather. For today, it probably was an advantage for us. It felt good tonight.”

Now, the celebration is giving way to preparation for a matchup that arrives with both pedigree and pressure—Morocco on the other side, Monday night in Monterrey, Mexico.

  1. Wait it says at Arrowhead Stadium but also Monterrey Mexico… I’m confused. Like how can the match be in Mexico if it’s talking about Kansas City fans?

  2. Honestly that own goal is what always happens when teams get stressed. If Tunisia just cleared it on that 3rd minute they would’ve had momentum and idk the whole thing changes. Also 3 million fans?? seems made up.

  3. Netherlands top group J like it’s no big deal but Tunisia scored and then just… stopped? Morocco better not underestimate them though. Also why does the article keep saying Arrowhead Stadium if the game is in Monterrey, Mexico, like did they teleport the stadium or something?
