For weeks, Netflix has let shared households make one account work for several people—up to five different user profiles—so each profile can get its own recommendations. Now the streaming service is pressing a different button.

Users are reporting that Netflix is showing an alert screen that says “personalized new ways to enjoy Netflix. ” and that alert is tied to a new requirement: for each individual profile. users must attach an email address. People say the screen reportedly doesn’t close until the step is completed. turning a routine setting into something you have to deal with every time the prompt appears.

The change is being described as rolling out “over the last few weeks,” and it appears uneven. Some users say the feature isn’t showing widely yet. and at least one report claims Netflix support didn’t seem to know what the alert was. In that case. support advised uninstalling and reinstalling the app to make the page disappear—though users say the prompt comes back shortly after.

The “why” sounds straightforward at first. Netflix’s login logic, in theory, becomes cleaner when profiles are tied to separate email IDs, since you don’t have to keep involving the owner of the main email address just to get into the right profile.

But two other promises are meeting resistance: the alert reportedly claims easier account recovery and better personalized suggestions. For some households, those reasons don’t land. Recovery is a byproduct of using separate emails. but personalization is something Netflix already does at the profile level—so users are left wondering what exactly is new beyond the added friction.

That friction can be especially sharp on shared devices like tablets or TVs. where one device may be used by multiple people across different profiles. There are also concerns for families that set up separate accounts for kids and elders to keep recommendations from bleeding into each other’s viewing. The practical question is simple: will Netflix restrict the prompt to smaller screens. or will it treat every device the same?.

One report points to a workaround that can stop the alert from bothering you. Reddit user goodashbadash79 highlighted an option to opt out. The steps are listed as going to Netflix account settings—accessible at netflix.com/account—then heading to Security and choosing to opt out of Feature testing.

Rollout timing remains uncertain, but there’s at least one comment suggesting the feature could begin as early as July 7. That same comment alleges Netflix will stop supporting 2FA codes via SMS. For now, nothing is confirmed, and Netflix has not issued a clear public statement.

Netflix was contacted for comment, and an update is expected. Until then, households sharing accounts are left with a new reality: even when Netflix says it’s making things easier, it may be asking users to do more before the screen will finally let them move on.

  1. I saw this pop up and thought it was a scam at first. Like why can’t my household just share like normal? It literally won’t let you close it, super annoying.

  2. This is just Netflix trying to force everyone to make separate accounts so they can charge more. They say it’s for “recovery” but I swear it’s really to lock down password sharing. Also support telling people to uninstall and reinstall sounds sketchy, but whatever.

  3. I don’t even know which email it wants. Like is it my own personal one or the family one? My TV just shows the message and then nothing else, so now I’m stuck clicking around like an idiot. And it came back after I reinstalled the app, so that advice did nothing for me. Netflix just keeps changing stuff and acting like it’s “personalization” when honestly it’s just more steps.
