Netflix cancels The Boroughs after one season

Netflix has canceled The Boroughs after only one season, dashing plans for Season 2 and beyond. The decision lands amid other high-profile Netflix cancellations, including Mindhunter, which was put on hold after two seasons in 2020 and later confirmed as cance

The second Netflix season that fans were waiting for never came.

The streamer has canceled The Boroughs after only one season, ending the show’s run before the creatives could continue the story into Season 2 and beyond. Netflix had previously positioned The Boroughs as its next Stranger Things, even produced by Matt and Ross Duffer—creators of the hit series.

The abrupt stop hits harder because The Boroughs was still sitting in Netflix’s top 10 when the cancellation was announced. For viewers who had been watching for the story to expand, it felt less like a natural pause and more like a door closing early.

Netflix has had a busy year of big swing projects, too. One of the first to land in the streamer’s top 10 this year was War Machine, backed by star Alan Ritchson, with Netflix confirming a sequel to the film is in the works. But while some stories are being extended, others are being cut short.

The Boroughs is not the only Netflix series to lose momentum before audiences were ready to say goodbye. After two successful seasons of Mindhunter, Netflix confirmed in 2020 that the show was being put on hold. That pause came with a practical consequence for the people who made it: actors were released from their contracts. At the time, that didn’t automatically mean the show was officially canceled.

Years later, Director David Fincher confirmed that Mindhunter was ultimately canned after only two seasons—and even to this day, it remains hard for many fans to swallow.

Mindhunter also mattered far beyond its own storyline. The show changed the game. not just for Netflix. but for the police procedural genre in general. helping pave the way for more crime hits that explore the criminal’s psyche and try to explain why people commit the kind of crimes that most viewers can’t stop thinking about.

  1. So they “put it on hold” and then somehow it becomes canceled? That’s basically bait-and-switch. Also Mindhunter was way better than whatever they’re replacing it with.

  2. Wait are they mixing up shows? Like I thought Mindhunter got renewed. My friend said it was coming back, then I hear Fincher saying nope, canned. Netflix really hates finishing stories, the Duffer guys would’ve done better though.

  3. If it was in the top 10 why cancel? Makes no sense. They’re saying War Machine gets a sequel but The Boroughs can’t even get season 2… seems like they just flip a coin based on budget. Also I didn’t even know it was supposed to be the next Stranger Things, I guess that’s why it got weird expectations and then got dropped early.
