Netflix pulled the plug on “The Boroughs” after one season, despite the sci-fi adventure’s early momentum.

The cancellation comes less than a month after the series debuted on the streamer on May 21. It arrived with a heavy-hitting cast including Alfred Molina. Geena Davis. Alfre Woodard. Bill Pullman. Denis O’Hare and Clarke Peters. and it quickly found an audience. The show has received positive reviews and has been among the streamer’s weekly Top 10 since its premiere.

At least one factor in the decision was production costs, according to information shared with the publication that first reported the news. Deadline was the first to report the cancellation.

For viewers who felt the story still had room to grow, the timing landed sharply. “The Boroughs” centers on retirement community residents who band together to discover a dark truth about their community after a monstrous creature is sighted.

The series’ co-creators, Will Matthews and Jeffrey Addiss, said they left the narrative open to the possibility of a Season 2 renewal. They also shared guidance they said they received from the “Stranger Things” co-creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, about how to approach an ending.

Matthews explained, “Tell a complete story. Crack the door on Season 2, but who knows? So don’t make it too much of a cliffhanger. Don’t marry yourself to anything that you have to then do. Have the ending be an ending that is fulfilling, and so we did.”

Addiss acknowledged that the first season doesn’t answer every question. “We know we didn’t answer all the questions,” he said. “And we fought and talked hard and long about which questions to leave open and why. But I will tell you that we have a plan, and we do know how this ends.”

The cast spoke warmly about what the series offered older adults on screen. Davis, 70, said, “It’s fantastic that all of us get to be heroic. That’s really unusual and great.” Woodard added, “We get to be the way mature people are in life. They’re not lying around. They’re active.”

The cancellation leaves fans with a show that was praised for representation, a premise that turned retirement into adventure, and a cliff of uncertainty the creators say they intentionally designed—balancing an ending that could stand on its own with the hope of extending it.

  1. I swear they just cancel whatever people actually like. Cost excuse always shows up. The ending felt like a whole cliffhanger too.

  2. If it was in the Top 10 shouldn’t that mean they renew? Maybe they didn’t like that older people were the heroes or something. Geena Davis being in it and they still dumped it, makes no sense.

  3. I’m not even surprised, Netflix cancels everything that isn’t “cheap” and trending on TikTok. Also the article keeps saying they left the door open but then like… didn’t open it lol. Production costs but sci-fi + Alfred Molina etc. How many episodes was it really, 10? Kinda feel robbed.
