NASA opens yearlong Mars simulation for volunteer crews

For a full year, volunteers will live like the planet is already behind the glass.
NASA has opened applications for its next Moon & Mars Exploration Analog (MMEA) mission. a year-long simulation designed to recreate the isolation. confinement. and day-to-day challenges of long-duration space travel. It’s not built to prove rockets or spacesuits. Instead, the agency wants humans to be the test.
Participants will live and work inside specially designed habitats while researchers watch how a crew functions under pressure. The questions are intensely practical: how people work together. how mental health holds up. and how daily habitat operations actually run when time. space. and privacy are all tightly constrained. Volunteers will carry out scheduled maintenance tasks. complete scientific experiments. respond to simulated emergencies. and settle into routines that could matter when the distance is measured in millions of miles from Earth.
NASA says the MMEA mission includes virtual reality spacewalk simulations and a mandatory social media detox—small details. but telling ones. aimed at stripping away distractions and turning attention back to the realities of living inside a confined mission environment. The simulation’s core focus remains the same: not technology first, but the human system that has to operate it.
The new MMEA effort builds on two existing NASA analog programs. HERA—Human Exploration Research Analog—studies the effects of isolation during spaceflight. CHAPEA—Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog—simulates a crewed mission on the Martian surface. NASA’s next MMEA mission is expected to begin no earlier than August 2027. giving the agency time to select and train the crew for their year of isolation.

So basically they’re just telling people “no social media” for a year and calling it Mars research? lol.
I don’t get why they need volunteers if they won’t “prove rockets or spacesuits.” Like what’s the point then? Sounds like expensive therapy with VR.
Mandatory social media detox is the real experiment. Also VR spacewalk sounds like how they test if people can get motion sick in a tin can. I saw “Mars simulation” and thought they were actually sending them to Mars for like a month… my bad I guess.
Wait, this starts no earlier than Aug 2027 and it’s a whole year? So they’ll pick people like 2 months before? I’m not even sure why they say millions of miles from Earth if they’re still watching them on cameras. Feels more like training for teamwork and mental health than anything practical. Still kinda cool though.
