Myron Rolle joins NFLPA to reshape player health

Former NFL safety and pediatric neurosurgeon Myron Rolle has joined the NFL Players Association as a strategic advisor, with a focus on player health, brain cognition, and preventative care for active players.

By the time Myron Rolle finished his NFL career, he had already started building a life around medicine. Now. the former safety is coming back to the sport through the NFL Players Association. stepping into a new role where his work is aimed squarely at what happens to players long after the final whistle.

The NFLPA announced that Rolle will join the union as a strategic advisor. His efforts will focus on player health, brain cognition, and preventative care for active players—an area that ties directly to his medical background as a pediatric neurosurgeon.

“This sport gave my family joy, discipline, and community,” Rolle said in a statement. “To return now. as a physician. researcher and former player. and contribute to the wellbeing of the men who make this game what it is. feels deeply meaningful. I am honored to support the NFLPA’s mission and help advance a future where every player’s health is protected with the highest standard of care.”.

Rolle’s path to this point has been anything but typical. He was named a Rhodes Scholar while playing at Florida State. The Titans selected him in the sixth round in 2010. He also spent time with the Steelers. but did not play in any regular season games before returning to Florida State for medical school in 2013.

That timeline—NFL player. then medical training. then a return as a physician and researcher—now feeds into the NFLPA’s stated priorities around protecting active players before harm becomes permanent. Rolle’s appointment places a former NFL locker-room perspective alongside a specialty that deals with the nervous system from the earliest stages of life.

For active players. the message is direct: the focus is shifting toward prevention. cognition. and long-term health—not just what can be treated after symptoms appear. Rolle’s return to the union turns a personal journey into a professional mission. one centered on the wellbeing of the men who keep the league moving every Sunday.
