Myles Garrett targets Bruce Smith’s 200-sack milestone

After being traded to the Rams, Myles Garrett set a new personal target: breaking Bruce Smith’s NFL record of 200 career sacks. Garrett, who recorded 23 sacks last season and has 125.5 sacks through his career, says catching Smith won’t be easy because Smith p

Myles Garrett didn’t waste much time turning this offseason into a bigger scoreboard. After the Browns traded him to the Rams this week, the 30-year-old spoke about the next benchmark that matters to him most: Bruce Smith’s NFL career record of 200 sacks.

Garrett said he has a friendly relationship with the Hall of Fame defensive end and would love to break the mark. In an interview with the Rams’ YouTube channel, he framed it as both a personal mission and a chance to honor the player who set the standard.

“There’s a big goal out there, that’s 200,” Garrett said. “I want to eclipse that, or I want to make it close. I have a good relationship with the guy who has that record, and being able to go get that one would mean a lot to myself, and to him as well.”

Last season, Garrett set the NFL record with 23 sacks. Through his career so far, he has 125.5 sacks. At the same age—30—Bruce Smith had 106 sacks, meaning Garrett is ahead of Smith’s pace. Still, Garrett knows the gap won’t close in a straight line. Smith played until he was 40. a longevity that not many defensive players replicate. and it’s part of why surpassing the record will be difficult.

Garrett also made clear what he wants more than anything in team terms. He said he knows the “GOAT” talk will come and go, but his priorities don’t shift when the conversations turn to legacy.

“The GOAT talk and all that, I’m sure that will come and go along the way, but I want to win,” Garrett said. “I want to win early and often.”

  1. Wait I thought Bruce Smith already had like 200-something? Or did they mean 200 sack season? Idk football numbers confuse me.

  2. Garrett moving to the Rams is basically him stealing the record from the Browns lol. Also 23 sacks last season, ok cool, but sacks don’t matter if your team sucks, and the GOAT talk is just marketing anyway.

  3. I get he wants to catch Bruce Smith, but the article says Smith played till he was 40 like that’s some cheat code. Myles is 30 now so if he doesn’t win a Super Bowl in the next year or two then the whole 200 thing kinda doesn’t matter? Just my take. Also I saw “125.5 sacks” and was like wait that’s not even close to 200, so how is he ahead of pace at the same age??
