LONDON — Corentin Moutet’s week at Queen’s Club ended with a fine, and it wasn’t for what happened on the scoreboard. The French tennis player has been slapped with a $40,000 penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after using profane language seven times in a post-match interview this week.
The incident came after Moutet’s first-round win on Tuesday against countryman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the ATP 500 grass-court event in London. Queen’s Club is widely treated as a final tune-up before Wimbledon, which begins on June 29.
During an on-court interview following the match, Moutet used an expletive for the first time. When the interviewer asked him not to use bad language, Moutet repeated the expletive three more times before adding three additional expletives at the end of the interview.
The men’s tour announced the decision Friday, saying Moutet received a fine of $40,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. The statement also said Moutet confirmed he will appeal the fine in line with ATP rules.
The 27-year-old is ranked No. 36 and is still searching for his first ATP title. He has. however. been involved in on-court confrontations before: last year. Moutet had a heated verbal clash with Alexander Bublik after a Phoenix Challenger event. At the time, the chair umpire had to step in to separate them.
As Wimbledon approaches, the timing of the fine adds a new layer of pressure on Moutet’s final stretch of preparation. He has chosen to fight the decision through the ATP’s appeals process.
