Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) warned Democrats against expanding what he called “the tent” to include candidates he believes “clearly are not in line with our values.” When asked about Hamawy’s win. Moskowitz told The Free Press’s Audrey Fahlberg that embracing candidates who don’t match those values would be “a real long-term mistake.”.

The conversation quickly turned to the specifics of Hamawy’s background and how far Democrats should be willing to go before the party draws a line. Moskowitz also said the question of which committees Hamawy should join is something to address after the election—signaling that. for him. the focus right now is on the nomination itself rather than the operational details of a potential term.

Hamawy’s candidacy has been shadowed by intense scrutiny of his past associations. He has drawn attention for links to the so-called Blind Sheikh. who was convicted of seditious conspiracy in 1995 as part of investigations into the first World Trade Center bombing. Hamawy served as a defense witness during the trial.

He has also come under fire for volunteering in a Gaza hospital—an effort that later was learned to be a Hamas operations center during the recent conflict.

That criticism has not come only from Democrats. On Wednesday, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) called for Hamawy to be investigated by Congress. asking. “How in the hell has a defense witness in the 1993 WTC bombing. with ties to Al-Qaeda been nominated by the Democrats to serve in Congress?” Lawler said that if Hamawy is elected in November. “Congress should fully investigate his ties to terrorist organizations and determine whether he is fit to serve.”.

With Hamawy set up for a likely November victory in a heavily blue district. the dispute inside the Democratic Party is now running in parallel with a growing Republican push for federal scrutiny—turning a primary result into a test of how Democrats handle candidates whose histories are already being contested in public.

  1. If he volunteered at a Gaza hospital that’s all I need to know… why would Dems even touch that.

  2. So Moskowitz is mad about “values” but like… weren’t half these guys tied to lobbyists anyway? I didn’t even read it all, just saw the headline. Also “tent”?? sounds like they’re trying to control who’s allowed to run.

  3. Wait, I thought Hamawy was some random local dude, not connected to the Blind Sheikh thing. Defense witness in the WTC trial?? That’s wild. But then it’s like… are we sure the hospital volunteering automatically means Hamas? I’m not defending him, I’m just like, this article makes it sound 100%.

  4. Democrats really love acting tough until it’s their own committee picks. Moskowitz says deal with it after the election like that fixes anything? And the Republicans are already screaming “Al-Qaeda ties” like it’s a movie trailer. Meanwhile everyone’s arguing values but nobody’s talking about how this stuff even gets verified.
