BALTIMORE — Dean Kremer didn’t just come back from a quad injury. He came back with purpose, pitching six impressive innings and helping the Baltimore Orioles avoid a sweep Wednesday with a 6-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Kremer, returning for the first time since April 18, improved to 1-1. He allowed a run and four hits. Tyler O’Neill did the heavy lifting late with a home run that helped Baltimore break the game open in a four-run fifth. Noah Schultz, who fell to 2-5, no-hit the Orioles for four innings but couldn’t hold them after that.

O’Neill also made a diving catch in right field with two on and two out in the fourth. a moment that seemed to keep the White Sox in the fight. But Baltimore struck again in the fifth when O’Neill tied it at 1 with a drive to left. following a strikeout and a walk that put runners on for Blaze Alexander. After Alexander hit a single, that was it for Schultz, who had gone through the order twice.

Sam Antonacci led off the game with a home run off Kremer. Leody Taveras then added a home run for the Orioles. giving Baltimore enough margin to withstand Chicago’s best early swings. The White Sox had taken the first two games of the series. and after Antonacci’s early blast. they didn’t do much more with the momentum they’d built.

CLEVELAND — Cleveland snapped Texas’ six-game winning streak with a win that carried a rare offensive burst.

David Fry and Austin Hedges hit home runs as the Guardians collected enough to end the run. Rookie Chase DeLauter added three hits for a Cleveland team that sits in an unusual place statistically: it was the sixth time this season the Guardians scored at least nine runs in a game. That kind of output stands out because Cleveland scored the second-fewest runs in June (87).

Fry’s three-run shot came in the five-run second inning. Hedges drove in three runs as well, including a two-run homer in the eighth. DeLauter extended Cleveland’s lead to 6-3 in the seventh with a base hit to right to score Steven Kwan, who had led off the inning with a triple.

Joey Cantillo improved to 7-3 to earn the win for the third time in his last four outings, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings. Cleveland will now host the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox in a pivotal four-game series starting Thursday.

BOSTON — Washington took the series by beating Boston at steamy Fenway Park, with James Woods providing a late jolt for the Red Sox.

Woods belted a three-run homer for his 22nd of the season. but Andrés Chaparro and Nasim Nuñez each hit their first home runs. and the Nationals hung on to beat Boston. Chaparro’s was a two-run shot, and Luis García Jr. added a pinch-hit, two-run single as Washington rebounded to close a 4-2 trip after losing the series opener on Monday.

Boston finished a 5-2 homestand after sweeping a four-game series against the Yankees.

NEW YORK — The Yankees’ skid stretched to seven, their longest in three years, and it ended in the 11th inning as Detroit turned the pressure into runs.

Camilo Doval forced in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded walk to Spencer Torkelson in a four-run 11th that gave the Tigers a 6-2 win. New York rallied with two runs in the ninth but stranded runners at second and third in the 10th when Keider Montero struck out Ali Sánchez.

In the 11th, Doval intentionally walked Riley Greene, then issued consecutive walks to Hao-Yu Lee and Torkelson. Zach McKinstry followed with a two-run single, and another run scored on a throwing error by Sánchez — the Yankees’ 17th error in 12 games.

The Yankees are now on their longest losing streak since a nine-game skid from Aug. 12-22, 2023. Missing Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Trent Grishman, New York managed seven hits and totaled just 23 in their last six games. The team has lost 11 of 14 and sits 12-15 since Judge fractured a rib.

Detroit took three games from New York and recorded its first series sweep of the Yankees since 2008.

CHICAGO — Dansby Swanson didn’t just swing the bat. He flooded the plate.

Swanson hit three home runs, including a grand slam, and Michael Conforto homered twice as Chicago pounded San Diego. Swanson delivered a career-high eight RBIs — the second-most in major league history from a player batting ninth. Seiya Suzuki, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch also homered.

Chicago scored its most runs in a home game since 1977. Swanson, who hit two home runs Tuesday, became the first Cub with back-to-back multihomer games since Patrick Wisdom in August 2021. He has nine home runs and 29 RBIs over the past 13 games.

San Diego and Chicago combined for nine homers in a 9-7 Cubs win Tuesday, and the slugfest kept rolling Wednesday with the wind howling to center again. Sung-Min Song hit the first of his career for the Padres, who saw the Cubs improve to 14-5 with the wind blowing out at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs have won five straight after sweeping the Padres, who are now on a five-game losing streak.

TORONTO — Nolan McLean and three relievers combined for a six-hitter, Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens hit solo homers, and the New York Mets beat Toronto.

Brooks Raley pitched the seventh, Luke Weaver worked the eighth, and Devin Williams finished for his 12th save in 13 chances. The Mets posted their fourth shutout and won for the second time in five games since Andy Green took over as interim manager when Carlos Mendoza was fired last Friday.

With their second win in 11 games, the Mets avoided falling 16 games below .500. The Elias Sports Bureau noted the most games under .500 for a team that reached the postseason was 16 by the 1914 Boston Braves (12-28). The Mets are 19-10 when they hit two or more home runs.

The Blue Jays have lost seven of eight, and the shutout loss was their fourth.

ATLANTA — St. Louis handed Atlanta another loss, powered by Nathan Church’s three-run homer and a steady start from Matthew Liberatore.

Nelson Velázquez added a solo shot as Liberatore threw five strong innings to help the Cardinals beat the NL East-leading Braves. Velázquez started a four-run fourth inning with his third homer of the year — a 444-foot shot to center field that tied the game at 1. Church followed later in the inning with his sixth homer of the season. a three-run shot that increased the lead to 4-1.

Liberatore struck out nine and allowed one run on one hit. Before Wednesday, he had a 10.34 ERA in the month of June. Riley O’Brien pitched a scoreless ninth inning and earned his 21st save. Jordan added to the total with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Masyn Winn in the top of the sixth.

Martín Pérez (6-5) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings for Atlanta.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Junior Caminero kept the streak rolling as Tampa Bay beat Kansas City for its seventh straight victory.

Caminero homered in his sixth straight game to match the Tampa Bay record, hitting a two-run shot in the first inning. He hit his 24th homer on the first pitch he saw from Seth Lugo (3-6) after Jonathan Aranda’s one-out single. Caminero tied Carlos Peña’s team record set in 2010.

Caminero is now two away from tying the major league record of eight. set by the Pirates’ Dale Long in 1956 and matched by the Yankees’ Don Mattingly in 1987 and the Mariners’ Ken Griffey Jr. in 1993. Rafael Devers was the last player to homer in six straight games. doing so for the Red Sox in May of 2024.

Shane McClanahan (7-5) limited Kansas City to three hits in six innings, throwing 49 of 69 pitches for strikes. The left-hander got back on track after going 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA in four June starts.

Cole Sulser struck out two in a scoreless seventh. Garrett Cleavinger got two outs in the eighth but left with two runners on base. Kevin Kelly retired Bobby Witt Jr. on a comebacker to end the threat. then allowed the first two batters to reach in the ninth before closing it out for his fourth save.
