Bruins add defense, but cap crunch looms

Don Sweeney and the Bruins made several moves on the first day of NHL free agency, including trades for goalie Joonas Korpisalo’s cap relief, defenseman Will Borgen, and forward JJ Peterka. They also signed Connor Clifton and re-signed Jordan Harris, while sti

Don Sweeney stepped to the microphones with a clear message: the Bruins weren’t done reshaping their roster.

“There easily could be,” Sweeney said of Boston potentially moving another defenseman. “Depending on where other teams sit and the conversations I’ve had, Charlie’s [McAvoy] not playing the first six games [due to suspension].”

He didn’t dress it up. Boston still has $5.3 million in cap space, but that flexibility may be temporary—especially with a crowded defense corps that likely needs to be pared down once the math hits harder than optimism.

The Bruins’ busy day on Wednesday came as the NHL’s first day of free agency created a wave of announcements across the league, but Boston’s work has carried a different tone: targeted additions, cap relief where possible, and deals designed to preserve options.

  1. I swear every year it’s like Bruins are doing a “temporary” fix and then they panic later. $5.3 million sounds like a lot until it isn’t.

  2. Cap relief for Korpisalo like ok cool but if McAvoy is suspended for the first six then they basically need a whole new defense right? also “cap crunch looms” sounds like they’re gonna trade everyone by Friday lol.

  3. Idk why they keep talking like they’ll maybe move another defenseman… isn’t that already what they did? Like Will Borgen is fine but I don’t get how you’re “preserving options” when you already spent the options. Also Cap Crunch is a cereal right so now I’m hungry and mad, thanks Don Sweeney.
