‘Missing’ Melania Trump not seen for 25 days as she skips 2 major D.C. events

First Lady Melania Trump has not appeared in public for 25 days as of this week, after missing two major events in Washington, D.C. She was last photographed on July 19 at the FIFA World Cup final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where she sat with President Donald Trump and other family members.

A White House spokesperson, however, clarified that the first lady’s absence stemmed from prior commitments already on her calendar, but did not offer further detail on what those commitments involved.

What Melania missed

Melania skipped a dignified transfer ceremony on July 22 that honored U.S. service members killed in Iranian strikes.

Two days later, she was absent from the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an event that had been postponed for nearly three months.

She also did not attend Senator Lindsey Graham‘s funeral on July 28, even though the South Carolina senator was a longtime ally of the Trump family.

Her last public sightings

Before her month-long disappearance from the public eye began, Melania attended the original White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April, an evening that turned chaotic when gunfire broke out near the venue.

Secret Service agents rushed her out of the ballroom along with the president and other officials.

In June, she joined Trump at UFC Freedom 250 on the White House South Lawn, sitting near UFC president Dana White and other members of the Trump family.

She then appeared at the July 4 Salute to America 250 celebration on the National Mall before making her final known appearance on July 19 at the World Cup final.

Security concerns in the background

The first lady’s team has also previously acknowledged threats against her.

The Secret Service has confirmed it is aware of an Iran-linked video that targeted Melania, a development that came amid rising tension between Washington and Tehran.

She has also lived with the aftermath of the assassination attempt against her husband in Butler, Pennsylvania, an event that has shaped the family’s approach to security in the years since.

However, senior adviser Marc Beckman has made a statement to People, assuring that the first lady remained “calm, decisive and in full control,” adding, “She’s not going to be deterred and she will not stop working as first lady of the United States. She will not stop attending events. Everything remains the same for her.”

“She’s aware that there is an inherent risk to her safety being first lady of the United States… but that’s not her focus at all…It’s part of being first lady, but she’s confident that the Secret Service will protect her and her family,” he added.

Not the first extended absence

This is not the first time Melania has stepped out of public view for weeks at a stretch. During Trump’s first term, she disappeared from public events for 24 days in 2018 after undergoing a procedure for a kidney condition described as ‘benign.’

She was last seen that year on May 10, welcoming home three Americans who had been detained in North Korea and reappeared on June 4, when she attended a White House event honoring Gold Star families.

At the start of Trump’s second term, Melania again stepped back from the spotlight for several weeks between January and February 2025. She resurfaced on January 24 with visits to North Carolina and California, as both states were dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters.
