Mira Sorvino begins Romy and Michele sequel shoot

Mira Sorvino, 58, posted a video from the set of the Romy and Michele sequel, marking the first day of production and fueling renewed excitement for the long-awaited return of the characters.

For longtime fans of Romy and Michele, it’s not just the costume that brings the past back. It’s the timing.

Mira Sorvino. 58. shared a new video to her Instagram account showing herself in character from the set of the Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel. In the clip. she appears in a platinum blonde wig and red lipstick. looking nearly the same as she did nearly three decades ago. She posted the moment as production moved from anticipation to reality.

“After 30 years, we have a sequel… I couldn’t be more excited,” Sorvino wrote from the set of Romy and Michele 2. In the video, she looks as if she might burst into tears of joy as she says the team has just completed the first day on set.

The sequel is expected to star Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, and the announcement has landed at a time when the original remains a go-to rewatch for many viewers. Sorvino has frequently returned to why the film resonates, but this time she didn’t need a speech—she brought fans to the set with her.

Sorvino’s enthusiasm sits alongside a broader run of public appearances and milestones. She was recognized with an Academy Award for her role in Woody Allen’s 1995 film Mighty Aphrodite. She is also the daughter of the late Goodfellas star Paul Sorvino, and she is married to Christopher Backus. The couple has four children.

Off-screen, Sorvino has also been spending time with her family in ways her followers have come to notice. Recently, she took to Instagram to wish her daughter, Mattea Backus, a happy birthday. Then last August. Sorvino turned another chapter into a headline: she announced she would be joining the cast of Chicago for a limited engagement at the Ambassador Theatre in New York City. She will play Roxie Hart, with the run scheduled from September 15 to November 2, 2025. In a statement. she said. “I have wished to dance and sing in a Broadway musical since I was a small child. ” and added. “To join Chicago. such a legendary show. and such an incredible cast. past and present. is literally a dream come true!”.
