Microsoft won’t rule out spinning off Xbox division

The Xbox future isn’t just being debated in boardrooms—it’s being stress-tested.

Microsoft is preparing to lay off a significant chunk of its Xbox division, while reevaluating plans for its next-generation Project Helix console. It’s also considering a dramatic restructuring of how it relates to Xbox, including the possibility of spinning the unit off into a separate company.

A new report from The Information says Microsoft has looked at multiple ways to make the Xbox business more sustainable. The options discussed include turning it into a wholly owned subsidiary. forming a joint venture. or spinning it off entirely. with the possibility of selling the business. The report doesn’t suggest any of this is imminent. Even so, it frames a clear message: new leadership has not taken any future off the table.

At the center of that push is Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Sharma has won approval to invest heavily in tentpole titles, including Halo and Fallout. Halo hasn’t seen a new release since 2021. Fallout’s most recent mainline entry, Fallout 4, came out in 2015.

Sharma has also said that major upcoming releases—Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution—would be Xbox exclusives. Those decisions point to a strategy built around anchoring Xbox’s identity with its biggest brands.

But the same plan comes with pressure elsewhere. The investment in the most popular franchises is likely to come at the expense of smaller studios and games that haven’t met sales expectations. leaving more teams facing the kind of uncertainty that tends to follow when a platform tightens its spending.

The story that emerges from these facts is hard to miss: while Microsoft weighs major structural moves for Xbox, it’s simultaneously betting that headline franchises can carry the next phase—Project Helix included—even as layoffs are already on the horizon.

  1. So layoffs are coming and now they’re “rethinking” Project Helix? Idk how that helps. Just keep games coming, not corporate shuffle.

  2. I swear Halo’s been dead for years, so investing heavily in it is kinda wild. Maybe they’re just trying to make it look good right before they sell Xbox to Sony or whoever.

  3. I don’t even get what a joint venture would do, like split the console team into two companies?? If they spin it off then will Game Pass still be the same price? Also why does it say Helix like it’s already out.
