Michael Penix Jr. meeting with doctor on Thursday, hopes to be cleared

Atlanta’s quarterback competition may be about to truly begin.

Via longtime Falcons reporter D. Orlando Ledbetter, Michael Penix Jr. is meeting with his doctor on Thursday with the hope of being medically cleared. Penix, however, will not question the doctor’s decision.

Penix has been recovering from a torn ACL suffered midway through last season. He has been participating in individual and 7-on-7 drills throughout training camp but has not yet progressed to 11-on-11 drills.

Penix had said in late July that he was hoping to be cleared in four weeks. There is still about another week until that date.

With Penix unable to participate in 11-on-11, Tua Tagovailoa has been taking the club’s first-team reps. But Tagovailoa did not play well in the preseason opener, and struggled at times during this week’s joint practice with the Colts.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski has told reporters that Tagovailoa is not set to play Saturday’s preseason game in Indianapolis.
