Mets fire Carlos Mendoza, Rosenthal maps trade options

A season that hadn’t gone the way Mets fans hoped hit a breaking point in Queens when the team fired manager Carlos Mendoza. For a franchise that now has to make sense of what comes next, the questions have already shifted from who’s in charge to who—if anyone—will be moved.

On June 26, 2026, Ken Rosenthal appeared on “Foul Territory” after the Mendoza decision, and he didn’t soften his message about the Mets’ path forward. He framed New York as a team that could sell at the trade deadline if results don’t improve soon.

“ If they don’t play better. even if they play a little bit better. but it’s still not good enough. they’re going to have to make some trades. ” Rosenthal said. He then singled out the players he sees as the most obvious trade pieces—especially given the possibility that the Mets will need to reshape their roster rather than just manage through the current season.

“The obvious guys are Freddy Peralta, a potential free agent, Brooks Raley, and AJ Minter, two left-handed relievers, both potential free agents,” Rosenthal said.

Those names carry weight in the deadline conversation for two reasons: role and timing. Peralta is described as a potential free agent, and Rosenthal tied Raley and A.J. Minter directly to the value of left-handed relievers at the deadline, adding that both are also potential free agents.

Rosenthal also put the Luke Weaver question on the table—then wrestled with it. He said the Mets could get aggressive with Weaver, who has another year left, and that Weaver has “been great.”

“If you want to get aggressive with Luke Weaver, who has another year left, you could do that; he’s been great,” Rosenthal said. “But I would think they intend to compete next year, and you’d probably want Luke Weaver on your team next year.”

His point sharpened as he described where the Mets appear to be headed. “It definitely appears to be heading that way, that they are going to be sellers. They don’t have a whole lot to sell, to be perfectly honest. I just listed the main guys. Peralta has been a huge disappointment. and lefty relievers. yes. they’re incredibly valuable at the deadline. but they only bring so much.”.

On the field this season, Weaver’s numbers are a big part of why his name keeps coming up. Rosenthal noted Weaver has posted a 2.12 ERA and collected 37 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched.

With Mendoza out in Queens, the Mets’ rebuilding calendar is suddenly closer than it was a day ago. And with Rosenthal’s list—Peralta, Brooks Raley, A.J. Minter. plus the lingering question of whether Luke Weaver would be available at all—the next few weeks will decide whether New York can pivot away from selling mode. or whether the roster changes start landing quickly.
